Essex County Championships 2010
Final Report
Chelmsford Swimming Club had cause for a double celebration after the end of the recent run of Essex Championships. The events held over four weekends from January to March bring together top swimmers from Essex clubs that have attained the required qualifying. At the end of the championships the points awarded to each swimmer are totalled and in each age group a top girl and boy are awarded.
This year Chelmsford Swimming Club are proud to have 2 Top Girls. Eliza Duffy in the 12 year age group and Evie Fisher in the 15 year age group.
Evie Fisher qualified for 16 swims and reached the final in all events gaining 7 Golds, 4 Silvers and 3 bronze medals and was placed in the top 6 with the other two swims. Eliza Duffy had an equally impressive run with 7 golds, 4 silvers and 1 fourth place along with two Essex event best times.
Along with Evie and Eliza, who both also broke Chelmsford Swimming Club Records, several other swimmers performed extremely well with Courtney Sanders and Danica Brazier also taking club records, Dan Sorrell gaining the gold medal for the 800 free along with event best time and then another gold medal in the 1500 free. The following swimmers all gained fantastic personal bests and were placed in the top 6: Evangeline Moir-Smith, Gus Veasey, Eleanor McCaffrey, Ben Roots, Orrin Mann, Dean Woodcock, Jon Lines, Alana Jones, Liam Nicholson and Holly Thompson.
This was the first outing for some of our younger swimmers and to achieve a final placing was a great moment for Holly Thompson (9). Liam Nicholson (10) had a fantastic swim in the 200m Breaststroke and although not initially ranked pulled out an amazing time and gained a silver medal and an Eastern Regional time.
Chelmsford also put in relay teams in the Girls and Women’s Freestyle and Medley events. Evie Fisher, Eliza Duffy, Courtney Sanders and Alana Jones won the Girls Medlay and were pipped at the post to gain a silver in the Freestyle. They came an impressive 4th in the Womens Freestyle team bearing in mind our eldest girl is 15 but pulled out of the Medlay relay as this had to be postponed.
Along with the above swimmers, Chelmsford had a good team of swimmers that included: Georgia Olley, Henry Broomfield, Ross Davy, Max Duffy, Jack Hargreaves, Emma Harley, Ethan Harrington, Lauren Harrington, Ellie Massey, Daniel Paddon, Charlotte Peters, Harriet Pitt, Millie Ratcliff, Katie Rockliff and Jack Ashton and when all points were added from everyone’s swims Chelmsford was placed an amazing 7th in Essex. This is a huge achievement as we are a relatively small club against the larger Essex and London Borough clubs.
Block B - 13th/14th February 2010
Well done to Danica Brazier for winning three Bronze medals, and breaking three club records in the 800m, 400m and 200m Freestyle races.
Evie Fisher had another great Essex block taking two golds in the breakstroke, Silver in the Individual Medley, and a Bronze in the 200m Freestyle.
In both distance and sprint Courtney Sanders showed her versatility with Bronzes in the 800m & 200m Freestyle and 100m Backstroke, whilst breaking her own club record in the 800m Freestyle.
Dan Sorrell was back on form with a Gold in the 800m Freestyle, taking not only another club record, but breaking the event best time too.
Evie Moir-Smith swam a seven second personal best, just missing out on yet another club record, to take Gold in the 100m Backstroke.
Eliza Duffy gained personal bests in all her races, took Gold in the 100m Backstroke and two Silvers in the 200m & 400m Freestyle, and broke 4 club records in the process (some of these in the heats).
Congratulations should also go to two of our younger swimmers, Georgia Olley who gained an 11 second personal best in the 200m Backstroke, and Holly Thompson who gained two fanstastic personal bests in her races.
Here's to Block C.
Support for the victims of the Haiti earthquake
As some of you are aware Chelmsford Swimming Club were the volunteers for the first block of the Essex Championships. In previous years the money raised at the raffle would have gone back into the supporters fund for the club but this year it was felt that any money raised should be given to the Haiti rescue fund.
We are proud to let you know that we raised a grand total of £310 from the sale of raffle tickets and donations of loose change.
All the money has been sent directly to the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace who are located and working in a hospital just outside the epicentre in Haiti, via Sister Catherine who works at Our Lady Immaculate a local school in Chelmsford.
The nuns are continuing to work in desperate surroundings and the local school next to the hospital has also been set up to treat the injured. The facilities and care depends entirely on donations and Chelmsford Swimming Club are proud to support this.
Many thanks again to everyone for your generosity.
The eligibility report for Blocks C & D are now available on the fixtures page. Could all swimmers/ parents check these and make sure that any errors or omissions are reported to Nicky Sanders ASAP.
Entries are £5 per event entered and cheques should be made payable to Chelmsford Swimming Club. Swimmers need to have informed Nicky by Wednesday 3rd February for Block C which events they wish to enter and Wednesday 24th February for Block D which events they wish to enter.
