Senior Water Polo Men end Clacton's 87 game winning run

22nd January 2014

Tuesday night saw the Chelmsford Senior Men Water Polo team host a very strong Clacton team at Riverside LC in the Eastern League.

Clacton have not lost a game in the last 87 starts and their team was just as strong as usual. Chelmsford fielded a very strong team too and this was shown with Chelmsford leading 5-0 at the end of the first quarter. Dan Paddon led the way scoring 2 goals in what was the best water polo Chelmsford had played for a long time. Joel Abbott, Chelmsford's very own Senior GB player, returned following a hand operation and helped, along with his brother Sam, gel the team and set up a great defensive drop and quick break on the counter attack, scoring 1 each.

Clacton picked up the pace in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and brought the scores back to 10-7. Chelmsford's young Freddie Beard had his best game for Chelmsford and put his long arms to good use in defence by stealing the ball from the Clacton forwards and releasing the ball quick which allowed Doug Jordan to put the ball in the back of the net.

Doug then gave away a soft penalty in the 3rd quarter but this led to the turning point of the game as Chelmsford's goalkeeper, Rob 'Klobber' Fraser, made a fantastic save low to the left. Chelmsford could now sense victory as the Clacton team started to argue amongst themselves and with the ref.

The last quarter saw the home team pull away from the visiting seasiders with Dan Paddon scoring 3 more and Sam Abbott 2. Clacton started to become feisty and physical in their play as they could see their winning streak coming to an end but Chelmsford didn't have to lower their standards and carried on playing as team.

Young Will Dixon, remember that name for the future, was given an outing with a few minutes to go and played like a star. He swam off from an unseen foul committed by one of the oppositions ex GB players, and instead of waving his arms in the air and moaning, just missed out scoring from a first time shot by a finger tip save from their goalie.

At the final whistle, the score was 15-9 to Chelmsford, and the joy on the coach's face was for all to see. He said "This was the best, complete, game of water polo Chelmsford has played for a long time and thanks must be given to the Abbott brothers. They lead from the front and are my voice in the pool. And with a good crop of juniors coming through, Chelmsford can only get better."

Ladies Waterpolo - Winter London League Division 1

22nd January 2014

The ladies waterpolo team have started their campaign in the Winter London League Division 1.

They travelled to Croydon to play 3 games, without their usual goalkeeper.

The first game, against Mid Sussex Marlins, saw them match them throughout the first half, but unfortunately were beaten 6-11 by Marlin's more organised team. Goals came from Dani Brazier (3), Natalie Edwards (1), Hannah Parkinson (1) and Stacey Freedman (1).

The next match saw them play Ealing with whom they drew 7-7, with goals coming from Dani Brazier (5), and Stacey Freedman (2).

Their final game against Polytechnic, was nip and tuck all the way, but were eventually beaten 3-5. Goals from Dani Brazier (2) and Helena Wright.

Congratulations to the highest goal scorers, Dani & Stacey, who are the youngest and oldest members of the team respectively. Sorry, Stacey !!

Katy Wills triumphs at Thetford

29th November 2013

Since joining the club at the beginning of the year, Katy Wills has made vast improvements in both her times and stroke technique. So much so that her coach got her to try out for the Runnymede Disability Squad. Even though the Left Sided Cerebral Palsy she suffers from means she has restricted movement, Katy has battled through the pain barrier and was asked to race in the Thetford Lions Club Disabled Swimming Gala at Breckland Waterworld on the 9th November.

She swam in 6 races: 25 metres Breaststroke; 25 metres Freestyle; Medley Relay 4x25 metres; Freestyle Relay Final 25x4 metres; Freestyle Relay Final 50x4 metres. Her sixth race was where she shone, and even though representing Runnymede SC, she did herself, Chelmsford SC and her Swimfit Coach Keith Walker proud by winning in the 25 metres backstroke in a new PB of just over 58 seconds.

Keep up the good work Katy!

East Region Inter Counties Masters Championship Report

24th November 2013

Two masters from Chelmsford Swimming Club represented Essex in the East Region Inter County Masters Championships at Newmarket, Suffolk on Sunday 17 November. Nick Hunt competed in 4 individual events and 3 relays. He came 1st in the 50m breaststroke, 4th in the 50m backstroke and butterfly and 5th in the 50m freestyle. Derek Gore competed in 2 individual events and 4 relays finishing 3rd in both the 50m freestyle and backstroke.

Every race earns your county points even if you are last in your event, so even if you are asked to compete in a race which is not your best stroke it is important to swim. Essex won the gala by only 2 points which meant that all points earned were vital.

CSC Swim Camp Report

7th November 2013

The club’s competitive swimming section returned last Saturday from an intensive training camp at the BEST Centre in Majorca. 33 swimmers from the City and County Development Squads were away, accompanied by Head Coach Sean Eveleigh, Coach Richard Mills, Team Manager Keith Mogford and 8 other adult chaperones.

The camp was a total success. The swimmers did four hours in the pool every day for the week, along with some land training and clocked up around 75km to 80km in the pool over the week. We were lucky with the weather, as apart from one day with the now infamous storm (see the updates page) the sun shone and temperatures were well into the 20s. All of the swimmers worked hard, mainly on their endurance.

The group managed to have fun outside of the training as well, with time spent relaxing on the beach, and participating in a beach Olympics (not sure if the egg and spoon is an official Olympic event!).

It’s the first time for several years that the club has organised a swim camp abroad, and the swimmers who went, ended the week all looking forward to the next one!

Congratulations to Hannah Tracey for winning this month's Jack Petchey Award.

Hannah started lifesaving in January with no prior knowledge of the skills. She has not only learnt and developed a new skill but has grown in confidence. She has worked well with the team and, with a bit of extra swimming coaching outside of class, is a strong member of Chelmsford Lifesaving Club.

Arran Rae - World Triathlon Championships

22nd September 2013

Arran (17) was in a race of 102 under 20's from all over the world. His race started at 8am with a 750m swim in the Serpentine which he completed in 9min 47sec. He was 16th quickest swimmer and the 6th (22) quickest GB athlete.

He had a good transition on to the bike, however, the bike being his weakest discipline, he dropped to 60th place. The bike course was wet and slippery and there were numerous crashes resulting in several competitors having broken bones.

Arran then ran 5k in a time of 17.39 posting the 29th quickest run time.

Arran had an awesome experience at the World Championships and is looking forward to a few weeks rest before he starts training for next season.

Well done Arran!

Synchro girls selected for East Region Development Team

22nd July 2013

Well done to the following young ladies who have been selected by Amy Bryant, the East Region Development Officer to join the East Region Synchro Training Team.

9-10 Years - Lena Leineman & Evie Reynolds

11 – 12 Years - Emily Jennings & Jenny Chandler

13 – 14 Years - Jessica Goodman & Ari Cook

The successful swimmers were put forward by their coaches following their performances at East Region competitions, and trials were held at Hemel Hempstead.

The location of the monthly training sessions will see the girls visiting pools in different towns and cities around the region, working on their skill levels which are a requirement for more advanced competitions.

Coaches from the clubs involved will be giving up their time on Sundays when they can to help coach the girls and get more land training time too.

A very positive aspect of these sessions will be the opportunity for our Swimmers to interact with girls their own age who love Synchro as much as they do.

We wish them all luck with the training and look forward to hearing results from future competitions.

Ladies Waterpolo Team Triumph !

18th June 2013

Last Sunday saw a full strength ladies' Waterpolo squad travel to the Whitgift School in Croydon to play their 2nd round matches in this year's summer London League Division 2.

Their first match against the City of Oxford team resulted in a win of 5-2, with goals from Rachel Moore (2), Dani Brazier (2) and Hannah Parkinson (1).

The team's second match was against Iceni, and despite Iceni taking the first goal Chelmsford never looked back and after two seven minute halves beat them 7-3. This time goals came from Tor Hawes (2), Dani Brazier (2), Jess Kneller (1), Rachel Moore (1) and Hannah Parkinson (1).

Their final match saw them play the only team to have beaten them so far, Southampton, and tension was high as our army of spectators watched. The game was nip and tuck for the first half, and most of the second half, but two goals within the last two minutes put paid to Southampton's chances of repeating their last win against us. The team won 5-3, with goals from Dani Brazier (2), Jess Kneller (1), Hannah Parkinson (1) and Rachel Moore (1).

The Lady of the Night was Hannah Parkinson, and the team is currently in first place in the league, with their last two games to play on 21st July.

Essex Masters Swimming Championships - 11th May

17th May 2013

Nine Chelmsford Masters represented Chelmsford Swimming Club at the Essex Championships on 11th May 2013 at Thurrock Leisure Centre.

Sophie Castle, our only female representative, swam six events, winning five and coming second in the other. This excellent result won her fourth place in the overall individual awards. Gordon Cartwright, in his first ever swimming competition, swam three races and attained third in the 200m freestyle. Adam McMeeking came third in the 100m freestyle and Malcolm MacGregor entered three freestyle races coming third in the 400m. Fred Vaeremans was also swimming in his first gala and did well to finish second in the 50m backstroke and third in both the 50 and 100m freestyle. Dave Pethers, who was competing after a long absence from swimming, swam four races and medalled in all of them with a first, a second and two thirds. In his age group Kevin Chesworth was supreme in freestyle winning the 50, 100 and 200m in very fast times. Derek Gore also entered four events and finished with three firsts and a second place. The real star of the team was Nick Hunt who entered nine events and won all of them earning him the best individual male swimmer of the meet.

The team only entered one relay and were first in the 100m medley event. In the club competition Chelmsford were third overall, which was exceptional considering we had only nine swimmers.

Ladies London League Waterpolo - 12th May

17th May 2013

Our Ladies Water Polo team took part in their first competitive match last weekend, travelling to Croydon, for the opening games of the 2013 Summer London League.

The first game was against Southampton, an experienced National League team. The girls played hard and eventually lost the game 9-5. Scorers were Dani Brazier (3) and Tor Hawes (2).

The next game was against Iceni, the East Region team, who also play in the National League. This was a very close fought game with Chelmsford running out winners 6 - 4. Scorers in this match were Dani Brazier (4), Karen Rodwell (1) and Lizette DeBruyn (1).

This was a very good start to the Summer League campaign, especially as the team had a number of players missing due to exams! But what made it special was the team was made up of a pair of mother and daughter combinations with Caryn Brazier playing with daughter, Dani and Captain Karen Rodwell playing alongside daughters Louise and Laura.

Well done girls we are looking forward to the next round on June the 16th - Keep up the training !

Marie Curie Swimathon

16th May 2013

A Big Thank You for raising an amazing £4,500 for the Marie Curie Charity

Chelmsford Swimming Club took part in the world’s biggest fundraising swimming event and raised over £4,500, swimming a massive 30 miles in one hour. Swimmers aged 6 to 60 took part from across the whole club, including our Competitive Squad, Masters and SwimFit divisions in-addition-to some of our younger swimmers from the Development Squad.

New Hall School, were delighted to be able to support the event and supplied the pool and lifeguards to enable the club to take part.

Swimmers got into the spirit of the event, and created teams with names such as Torpedo Turtles, Triple Trouble and even the Harry Potter Banana Bunch, with matching swimsuits or team logos; and even the coaches managed to get in the water and swim the distance, with plenty of support from club swimmers on the sidelines.

Well Done to all of you that took part and don't forget to get any last sponsorship money in to Swimathon and next year we will be looking for even more of you to take part!!

GB Waterpolo team update

Dani, who used to swim competitively for CSC wishes more girls, especially ex-competitive swimmers would get involved - "The competitive spirit is brilliant and it's great being part of a team of mixed ages and abilities. Winning makes it even better!" We'd like to wish Dani and her GB Teammates a very successful trip.

Following the success of the Chelmsford Swimming Club synchronised swimming team at the Essex County Championships held at Riverside Ice and Leisure last year, the team set off to the East Regional competition held at Stevanage this month and once again performed spectacularly. With Gold medals in a number of categories, the synchronised team are delighted with their achievements and looking forward to continued success.

Members of the club, who train at Riverside Ice and Leisure, focused on developing exciting routines that were delivered with the precision and flair you would expect from one of the Counties most succesful synchronised swimming teams.

Jessica Goodman and Eleanor Randall produced solo routines that saw Gold and Bronze being won respectively, with a Gold also being awarded to Nina Fix in the 18-19 year old category.

In the duets there was further success with Evie Reynolds and Lena Leinaman (Age 9) winning Gold in their first ever competition, Emily Jennings and Jenny Chandler (Age 12 and under) retaining their Gold medal position and winning the duet category and new comers Ari Cook and Lucy Jones also winning Gold with an outstanding performance and team mates Alex Jellicoe and Josephine Worsley coming in third. In the Open Duet, Laura Frostick and Lucy Bird, two of the clubs most experienced and talented synchronised swimmers were delighted to bring home a Silver medal from the Regional event.

There was further delight in the team performances with a Bronze medal in the 13-14 years age group and in the open team category.

The whole club performed brilliantly and were excited to have performed so well against strong competition from across the East Region.

British Empire Medal for Dawn Bracken

7th January 2013

Congratulations to one of our long standing members and coaches, Dawn Bracken, for being awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours list for her work as a Pre-Games Volunteer at London 2012.

Dawn, a long standing member of Chelmsford Swimming Club, has volunteered with CSC in a number of roles as Masters Secretary, teacher, coach, competition secretary and press and PR officer and was delighted to be selected in 2009 as a pre-games volunteer for London 2012 and eventually contributed more than 1500 hours with the Nations and Regions team (a department at LOCOG whose job it was to get the message of the Games around all the Nations and Regions of the UK).

Dawn's passion for swimming also resulted in her being selected as a Games Maker in the Aquatics centre during the Olympics and Paralympics and gave her the opportunity to chaperone athletes from the moment they got out of the water until they arrived at the medal ceremony area, including chaperoning Michael Phelps on his last ever race!

"I would happily do it all again, given the chance. I finished volunteering with London 2012 at the end of October and was then offered a job working on the Games Maker legacy. My job has meant I've had to take a break from coaching for a while but I hope to return to it soon" Dawn Bracken

Training and Sickness do not mix !!

26th October 2009

Over the last few weeks quite a few swimmers have been turning up to training with the start of a cold or flu, and getting out early or not training fully, which in the hot damp environment of the pool spreads the illness rapidly around the rest of the swimmers

Unless you are well enough to train properly, you should not attend a training session. Swimming is an intensive sport and requires 100% fitness, so if you are unwell please do not come to training and spread your germs to others. A few days off usually means you are not contagious, so please respect the other swimmers in your squad.
