East Region BAGCat Championships 2012 - 2nd/3rd, 9th/10th June

The weekends of the 2nd/3rd and 9th/10th of June saw the turn of the 10-14 year olds competing in their Regional BAGCat Championships. Fourteen swimmers had gained qualifying times this year and for many it was their first time at these Championships.

Day one - Session one kicked off with the boys 100m Backstroke where 10 year old John Barber got off to a flying start and reached the final where he came 4th. Although John missed out on a medal he broke the club record which had stood since 2005. 14 year old Ethan Harrington narrowly missed out on a place in the final coming 10th in his age group. Next up was the girls 200IM. 10 year old Emily Pilling, 11 year olds Lucy Hagger and Holly Thompson and 14 year old Courtney Sanders all competed in this event. Unfortunately only Courtney went through to the finals where she won a bronze medal. Emily was a reserve for the finals in 10th place. It was then the turn of 13 year old Ole Mills to compete in the 400IM and after a superb breaststroke leg he finished in 8th place.

After another warm up Holly Thompson swum the 800M Freestyle, as she was the only 11 year old entered at this distance she was lucky enough to come away with a gold medal!

Session two in the afternoon saw Holly and Courtney swim in the 100M Freestyle. Again Courtney reached the final where she finished 4th but for Holly it seemed the 800M Freestyle had taken its toll on her. John and Ethan were back in the pool for the 200M Backstroke and this time they both reached their respective age group finals where John bagged himself a bronze medal with Ethan finishing 7th.

Day two - Session three and some new faces arrived at the pool. 12 year old Liam Nicholson joined Ole Mills in the 200M Breaststroke where they both qualified for their respective finals. Liam came 7th and Ole won a bronze medal in a great final where less than half a second split 1st, 2nd and 3rd spot. Kayleigh Ward, recently turned 12 and Holly Thompson competed in the 400M Freestyle.

The last session of the first weekend – Session Four saw John Barber, 12 year old Max Duffy and Ethan Harrington compete in the 100M Freestyle. All swum well but unluckily didn't make it to finals. Courtney and Holly finished off a long weekend with the 200M Freestyle with Courtney reaching her 3rd final and collecting another bronze medal.

The medal total at the end of the first weekend was 1 gold and 4 bronze and everyone was looking forward to adding to this.

Saturday 9th June – Session five kicked off with the girls 100M Backstroke, Chelmsford had five girls competing in this event, Emily Pilling, Lucy Hagger, Holly Thompson, Courtney Sanders and 11 year old Georgia Olley. Another finals appearance for Courtney in this event saw her collect another bronze medal. For the boys it was the 200IM and John Barber, Max Duffy and Ole Mills all competed. Max just missed out on a finals appearance with a 10th place. The last event of this session was the girls 400IM and Holly Thompson managed a 4th place.

Session six in the afternoon and John Barber and Max Duffy were joined by Ethan Harrington for the boys 200M Freestyle. Max won his heat in very convincing style and went through to the final where he picked up a bronze medal. John narrowly missed out on the finals with a 10th place. The girls 200M breaststroke saw some new swimmers competing. Lauren Scott, who recently turned 10, 12 year old Eleanor Clarke, 14 year old Lucy Neal plus Holly Thompson swum this event. Lauren who was ranked 9th had a great swim and made it through to the final where she again performed well and won a bronze medal, missing out on the silver by 0.07 of a second! Holly made it through to her final in 7th place and then swum nearly 4 seconds faster to finish 6th. Lucy also made the finals but she was feeling so unwell she withdrew and did not swim it. The last event was the boys 100M Breaststroke which saw Liam Nicholson and Ole Mills swimming. Ole reached the finals where he came 7th, Liam just missed out with a 9th place in the heats.

Session seven on the last day of the Championships commenced with the girls 200M Backstroke. Up for this were Emily Pilling, Lucy Hagger, Holly Thompson and Courtney Sanders. Holly and Courtney reached the finals were they both came 5th in their respective age groups. Ole Mills rounded off his two weekends of competing with the 400M Freestyle.

The Championships were bought to a close with Lauren Scott, Holly Thompson and Eleanor Clarke competing in the girls 100M Breaststroke. Lauren and Holly reached the finals where they finished 6th and 7th respectively. Eleanor just missed out with a 10th place finish in the heats.

The medal total was 1 gold and 7 bronze with 17 final appearances. John, Ole, Holly and Courtney also finished within the top 10 swimmers in their age groups. Well done to everyone.

East Region Youth Championships 2012 - 5th & 6th May

Chelmsford Swimming club's competitors once again excelled at the recent East region swimming championships held in Basildon. Up against the very best swimmers from across the east of England, they more than held their own finishing 4th overall whilst also being top club from Essex.

The tone for the whole weekend was set right from the first session where the swimmers combined for 6 final appearances and 2 medals a Gold for Evie Fisher in the 17 and overs 200m Breaststroke and Bronze for Tom McLagan in the 15/16 years 200m Individual Medley, other finalists were Eliza Duffy 5th 100metres butterfly, Gus Veasey 4th 200metre I/M and 8th 100metre Backstroke and Sarah Larner 5th 100m Butterfly.

Session 2 started with the Boys relay team of Tom McLagan – Gus Veasey-George Knight and Matt Thompson finishing a creditable 5th in their 4x100 metre Medley, whilst the Girls team of Hannah Travell - Evie Fisher-Sarah Larner and Eliza Duffy were an agonising 4 hundredths of a second off a Bronze medal in their 4x100metre Freestyle event, they did however smash by 3 seconds (subject to ratification) the Essex County record which has stood for 22 years, both teams being the top teams from Essex in their respective relays. More individual medals were won with Eliza picking up Bronze in her 15/16 years Girls 200metre Backstroke and Evie a Silver in the 17+ 50 metre Butterfly, Sarah also making the final of this event with a 7th place finish.

The final session of Saturday saw more finals and good swims notably from Hannah Travell who picked up a good PB in her 15/16 years Girls 200m Freestyle event , with George Knight qualifying through to the final and a 4th place finish in the final of the 15/16 Boys 200metre Butterfly, Evie Fisher continued her medal haul with Gold in the 50metre Breaststroke.

If the first day was a success then day 2 was to prove even better, Hannah Travell on her way to a massive PB and Evie Fisher easily qualified for the finals of their 200metre Individual Medley events. Hannah Travell then swam again in the 100metre Backstroke heats and was joined in the final by Eliza Duffy. Sarah Larner, Gus Veasey and Matt Thompson also made finals. Evie picked up Bronze in her Medley final whilst Hannah would finish 8th in her final saving her best efforts for the upcoming backstroke final. Eliza swam to Gold in the 100metre Backstroke with Hannah 5th whilst Sarah gained 6th place in the older age bracket for the same event, Gus Veasey punching above his weight in the double age group swam to a fine 5th place in the 200metre Breaststroke, whilst Matt Thompson after being called up from 1st reserve broke the club record on way to a fantastic 5th place in the 50metre freestyle.

The penultimate session started with more relay events, first up were the Girls (Hannah Travell – Evie Fisher- Eliza Duffy – Sarah Larner) in their 4x100metre Medley event, they again showed what a fine team they are, to break their own Essex County record by 3 seconds and pick up a Silver medal. The boys' team (Tom McLagan – Gus Veasey - George Knight and Matt Thompson) once again mixed it with the big clubs and finished in a very good 4th place in the 4 x100 metre Freestyle again both teams coming top from the other Essex clubs. The rest of the session was more of the same medals and finals, Eliza and Hannah both qualified for the final of the 50metre Backstroke with Eliza picking up Silver and Hannah finishing 7th ,Sarah was 6th in the 17+ 50metre backstroke, meanwhile Evie completed her full set of Gold medals from the Breaststroke events by winning the 100metres, Gus finished 6th in the 200metre backstroke with Tom making 2 finals 4th 200metre back and 7th 50metres Butterfly.

The final session of long weekends swimming saw Evie make the 100metre final and finish 7th with Gus turning in a fine effort to gain 6th place in the 400metre Individual Medley, whilst also breaking the club Under 16 record in his 50metre Breaststroke heat , swim of the session went to Tom McLagan who gained his first National Qualifying time in the same event on his way to picking up 4th overall.

Also heading to Sheffield will be the Girls relay team where their efforts were enough to secure them National relay entries in both the Freestyle and Medley events; this is the first time in the clubs history that a girls relay team has reached the finals of such a prestigious event.

A fine effort from all associated with the club, a total of 10 medals (4 Gold 3 Silver 3 Bronze) with every swimmer picking up long course PB's and final appearances.

Junior Speedo League R3 Team - 2010

All the children did really well and were very well behaved. We only had a few DQ's this time.

Although we drew with Anaconda on league points they won it on gala points from round 3. That means we stay in division 1 for next year.

The final results were:-

Gala Results

League Results

All the volunteers did well too. Bob Snow did a fantastic job coordinating all the officials and leading the gala, Chris Clarke did well with the announcing and Paul Brazier took to being starter like he'd done it before! Paul Duffy and Simon Ratcliff handled the recorders roles superbly and Paul's efficiency and accuracy was amazing. Thanks also to the people who helped timekeep, referee, judge, steward and whip.

Braintree Open is next week and Ipswich Summer Sprints the week after so lets hope we get some good pb's and results from those two opens to finish the season.

Well done again to everyone.

East Region BAGCat Championships - 5th/6th June 2010

Well done to all the swimmers that swam in the 'Easterns' last weekend. Courtney Sanders narrowly missed a medal place and national time in the 200m Individual Medley to start the day, but finished the weekend with a haul of 3 Bronze medals in the 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle. Gus Veasey swam well in the 400m IM to get 3rd and another Bronze. The end of the first session on Saturday culminated in an exciting 800m Freestyle race which saw Danica Brazier win her heat by 1/10th of a second to not only gain another Bronze medal, but her first National qualifying time. The second session on Saturday saw Courtney win her first Bronze, and Eliza Duffy the first Gold in the 100m Freestyle.
Sunday started well with a Bronze medal for Eliza in the 100m Fly, then came the turn of our youngest swimmer, Liam Nicholson in the 200m Breastroke. Liam was ranked in first place in the heats, and true to form swam a steady race to go into the final in 1st place with a time of 3:23.53. However, he blew that time out of the water (so to speak) in the final, not only finishing in the Gold medal position but knocking another 6 seconds off his heat time to notch up his second ever club record !
The remainder of the weekend's glory went to Courtney and Eliza, winning 2 Bronze medals and a Silver medal respectively.
Well done to the other swimmers, notably Evie Moir-Smith, who secured a 5th place in the final of the 100m Fly with a new PB, and Orin Mann who swam well in the 100m Freestyle.

Mention must also be made to the following swimmers who were all placed in the medals, Alex Rae, Isabella Collins, Holly Thompson, Bethany Harrington, Gabriel Summers, Daniel Paddon, Declan Hardy, Orin Mann, Ross Davy, Liam Nicholson who was placed in the top 3 in all 5 of his races, Charlie Getting, Arran Rae and Max Duffy who achieved a hat trick of silver medals. For some of the above this was their first outing to an open meet so hopefully there were very happy children at the end of the day.

British Gas National Age Group Championships - Sheffield

Would the endless hours of training and early mornings have been enough to allow our young talented squad to make their mark? Five Chelmsford swimmers travelled to Ponds Forge, Sheffield to attend the British Gas National age group championships. Qualification times for the event are extremely challenging and only the top few percent of swimmers qualify.

Scheduled over five days, Daniel Sorrell (14) was first to compete in the 400m Freestyle and had a good swim, giving a morale boost to the younger members of the team. Courtney Sanders (11) and Eliza Duffy (12) in the 100m Freestyle both achieved personal best times and secured places in the evening finals. Gus Veasey (12) also secured a place in the final swimming a PB in the 200m Breaststroke. Courtney, Eliza and Alana Jones (13) ended the morning session with good performances in the 200m backstroke.

Returning to Ponds Forge on a vey hot evening, Courtney swam with great courage to take 9th place, while her team mate Eliza managed to secure another PB and finish 6th. Gus had some tough competition and finished 10th. Coach Karen Turner said of the first day, “there were some fantastic individual performances out there today”.

Courtney and Dan returned on Thursday for the 400m Freestyle and 1500m Freestyle respectively. Courtney made the final and swam another PB in the process. She then swam into 10th place in the final later in the day. Dan achieved a PB of 17:06.70.

On Friday, Eliza gained another PB and made the final of the 200m Freestyle. The evening saw Eliza rise to the challenge and improve upon her mornings time to finish 7th.

Dan Sorrell turned out to give the girls some much needed support and both girls gained new PBs in the 100m backstroke, with Courtney again qualifying for the finals. Tables turned and the girls were on poolside to cheer Dan on in the 800m Freestyle. Courtney’s placing in the final was 10th.

On the final day, Eliza and Courtney put in good performances in the 200m Individual Medley, completing their set of BAGCAT points across the four disciplines (sprint, distance, form and Medley), finishing 11th and 13th respectively.

Dean Woodock was our only youth entry. He has been specialising this year in medley races and competed in the 400m Individual Medley.

Ipswich Summer Sprint Meet - 11th/12th July 2009

“I could get addicted to these pbs”

Alex Rae’s quote of the weekend above says it all, what a fantastic weekend for the 19 swimmers that attended the Ipswich Summer Meet.

We could count on one hand the number of swims that were not a personal best for the children involved. It was a pleasure to watch as each swimmer consistently produced excellent swims one after the other.

Emma Harley who has not long been in the Squad produced some amazing swims knocking almost consistently up to 10 seconds off all her 100 sprint times. Liam Nicholson, showed us that he was something to look out for in the future, collecting a good haul of medals to take home. Bethany and Lauren Harrington again took home a nice collection of medals and lots of smiles from Bethany with her medals hanging round her neck. Mathew Knowles, Jack Pickering, James Winter, Gabriel Summers, Charlotte Hayley, Millie Gillespie, Alex Rae had all their swims moving in the right direction and did a pb in every one of their events. Aaran Rae, Eleanor Mccaffrey, Rebecca Smith, Jack and Dani Mcintrye all swam well and gained several pbs between them. A good competition ensued between Danica Brazier and Evie Moir-Smith, both of whom swam extremely well and who were both in the running to get top girl in the 10 year old age group. Danica led the field consistently right up to the end of session 3, but unfortunately due to the restriction of entry times she was unable to swim the last two races and therefore was pipped to the title by a swimmer from another club. Evie Fisher swam pbs in all her races apart from one, beating every girl in all age groups for the 100im with a fantastic swim. Again in the running for top girl in her age group missed out by 1 point at the very end.

What a pleasure to have such fantastic swimmers at Chelmsford, they were a credit to the club with their team spirit and good behaviour. I am sure there are a lot of very happy but tired children today with a lot of deserved medals. Well done to all that were there. I enjoyed every minute of it.

Colchester Open Meet - 23rd May 2009

Well done to all the swimmers that competed on Saturday in the 2009 Colchester Open Meet.

The clear winners of the Reg Baines trophy for the best visiting club were Chelmsford, with 172 points. Rochford (128) edged into second place ahead of Brentwood (123) and Bishop's Stortford (75) narrowly claimed fourth from Harwich (74) and Braintree (62). Hosts Colchester scored 485.

Chelmsford also led in the girls' competition with 117 points. Bishop's Stortford's all-girls team amassed 75 points while Harwich (57) narrowly snatched third place from Braintree (56). In the boys' competition, Rochford's 85 point haul beat Brentwood (78) into second place; Chelmsford's boys (55) could only manage third. Colchester boys scored 309 and girls 176.

Philippa Davenall of Colchester won all her five races, breaking four records in the process, to win the best girl award. Colchester swimmers Matthew Lemnell (who broke two records) and Tom Vickers (who equalled one record) both scored 28 points out of a maximum 30 so the best boy award was decided on the "tie breaker" and went to Matthew as the youngest swimmer.

This really was a year when the records tumbled - including four which had stood for over 10 years!
